I live in Andorra, which I first saw in early 1958 while on my way by train and bus to take up my post as professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Salamanca. At once I was enraptured by the wild beauty of its mountain landscapes, of infinite variety and always dramatic in changing light and weather. I decided that one day I would return to live in this enchanted land.
It was not until 1975 that I was able to realize my dream, when I bought an apartment with a superb mountain view in the pleasant village of Encamp. At first I was able to stay here only for about four months every year, because by then I was teaching at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. But after 1988, I stopped teaching and was able to live permanently here.
